Learning SHOULD be fun!
Our training methods vary according to the
temperament and drive of each dog. First, we find out what motivates your
dog. Then we use positive reinforcement and
your pets' natural instincts to modify and improve behaviour. We do not
use harsh corrections and we emphasize having fun! Classes are taught
year-round.
Our instructors:
Tracy, the owner of Pet Pampering, started her business of caring for and
training dogs in 1995. In
addition, she has lived and worked with wildlife in a wildlife rehabilitation
centre and studied animal behaviour in Kenya, Africa.
Sally is an experienced
clicker training instructor with all ages and types of dogs and started teaching
in 1995. She also teaches our Agility classes.
Both enjoy teaching and are more than willing to chat about specific issues your
dog may have.
Clicker Training Classes:
Teach your dog or puppy obedience, bond with your
dog, and learn how dogs learn! More and more
people are enjoying clicker training and are happy they have found a method that
works.
What is clicker training?
"Clicker training" is a fast and effective way of teaching your dogs
obedience, tricks and good behaviour. Professional animal trainers have
used this method for many years - dolphin and wolf trainers for example - and
today it is becoming popular with dog lovers everywhere. A
"click" sound is made by a small handheld object called - logically -
a clicker. The dog learns that the "click" sound means a reward
is coming, usually a tasty treat, but the reward can also be a game of fetch,
the dog's favourite toy, a belly rub or even something the dog wants to do, like to
dash off and play with another dog. The "click" is not a
replacement for praise, but rather a replacement for the word "yes!"
when your dog does what you want. The "click" is more precise
and consistent than saying "yes!" and easier too!
The "click" is then used the instant
your dog does what you want her to do. For example, if you want your dog to
sit, you could click the instant her bum touches the floor. She then
realizes exactly what you want: she knows she will get a reward only if her
bum touches the floor, not if she almost sits, or not if she looks sideways, or
not if she stands and barks....
The clicker is used to teach new behaviours or to
improve behaviours. You will not have to click forever!! Once the
dog has learned what you want, the "click and treat" can be phased
out.
Types of classes:
Because there are no corrections in clicker training, puppies can
participate in the same classes as older dogs. However, we do not expect
as much from puppies as older dogs. For example, while an adult dog
starting training to "sit" may be clicked and treated after sitting
for 3 seconds, a puppy may be clicked and treated after sitting for one second.
